At the awards banquet, Colonel McBrearty quoted Singlevich as saying that the rancher’s wife “looked at us in shock, gasped and then fainted dead-way! …It was one of those, ‘What do we do now?’ moments. …We then grabbed the payload, bundled up as much of the balloon as we could gather, and ran back to the helicopter. In a few seconds, we were outta there!”
In July 1947, a “flying disk” crash landed in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico. Military troops moved into the area to investigate and recover debris from the crash site. Mike Turber, who claims to be a former Air Force intelligence expert, revealed on ‘The Hidden Truth Show’ with Jim Breslo (see videos below) that the infamous ‘Tic Tac’ UFO captured on video by Navy pilots with the USS Nimitz carrier group off of San Diego in 2004 is actually technology created by the US military.
In (August)1974, John Lennon was gazing out of the apartment window of the Manhattan apartment he shared with May Pang, “just daydreaming around in my usual poetic frame of mind”, when he saw a UFO hovering around 100 feet away over a nearby building.
The ‘FLIR 1’ UFO video taken by Navy aviators assigned to the USS Nimitz carrier group which captured an ‘unidentified aerial phenomena’, now commonly known as the ‘tic tac’ UFO, is one of the most widely-discussed UAP instances of the modern era.
According to US Naval theorist Alfred Thayer Mahan, the United States achieved dominance and “victory” over the “high seas” on Earth by enabling and protecting global commercial shipping. Through a strong Navy, a civilian Merchant Marine, and control of strategic geography including coaling stations, island possessions, choke points, and great works such as the Panama Canal, the American shipping domain included all of the “blue waters” of the world’s oceans.
The entire National Defense Space Architecture system will eventually involve thousands of satellites. Each layer will perform a different function, such as detecting incoming missiles, alerting ground forces of potential threats, keeping tabs on potentially hostile weapons systems, and augmenting navigational capabilities, among other important defense roles.
So what exactly is going on with these patents? Are they proactive of future technology or simply misinformation aimed at rival nations? Is the Navy on the verge of changing human technological progress as we know it? Or do they represent a breakthrough that has already occurred?
Most SETI research assumes that beings on different worlds will be able to communicate in the same way that we do, says Webb. It presumes a technological compatibility in using radio telescopes and understanding the universal language of science and math. “(But) if E.T. was looking at us, what would they see?” Webb asks.

Now this ambitious crowdsourced effort has been closed down as the scientists have analyzed all of the data they need for now, and it’s reached ‘the point of diminishing returns’. “We’re extremely grateful to all of our volunteers for supporting us in many ways during the past 20 years.”
• On Twitter, UC Berkeley’s SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) department wrote: “Thanks to the many volunteers who have helped crunch data for SETI@home in the last two decades.” As of March 31st, the project will stop sending out new work to users. But “Stay tuned…. We have some exciting new ways for the public to contribute to SETI@Berkeley that we will announce in the near future.”
• Earlier this year, scientists at the SETI Institute announced that they are developing state-of-the-art techniques to detect ‘technosignatures’ in space which indicate the presence of alien civilizations. These are ‘detectable indicators’ such as large amounts of oxygen, smaller amounts of methane, and a variety of other chemicals. They plan to develop a system that will ‘piggyback’ on the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope based in New Mexico.
• Dr Tony Beasley, director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) telescope based in Virginia, US, said, “Determining whether we are alone in the universe – as technologically capable life – is among the most compelling questions in science.” “[T]his new system will allow for an additional and important use for the data we’re already collecting.”
• Victoria Meadows, principal investigator for Nasa’s Virtual Planetary Laboratory at the University of Washington, which studies to detect exoplanetary habitability, said, “Upcoming telescopes in space and on the ground will have the capability to observe the atmospheres of Earth-sized planets orbiting nearby cool stars, so it’s important to understand how best to recognize signs of habitability and life on these planets.” “These computer models will help us determine whether an observed planet is more or less likely to support life.”
• SETI’s ‘Breakthrough Listen Initiative’, which launched in 2015 to ‘listen’ for signals of alien life, has released the most comprehensive survey yet of radio emissions from the plane of the Milky Way galaxy and the central black hole. The Initiative is now inviting the public to search the data, gathered from various telescopes around the world, to look for signals from intelligent civilizations.
• [Editor’s Note] SETI’s ongoing “search” for extraterrestrial intelligence reminds me of Macbeth’s soliloquy: “a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. • At the end of World War II, the U.S. Government brought a number of prominent German scientists to America under what was called ‘Operation Paperclip’. One of these scientists was the now legendary Wernher von Braun (pictured above), who functioned as a key figure in the design of American rocket technology, including the Saturn rocket that first took us to the moon in 1969.
• When a UFO crash occurred northwest of Roswell in early July 1947, President Harry Truman needed to make some quick decisions. As we all know, he ordered the military to cordon off the area and take control of the crash site. Truman also decided to bring in civilian scientists to examine the crashed UFO. This may have included Robert Oppenheimer and Wernher von Braun. In his book, “Is E.T. Here?”, UFO researcher Robert Trundle indicates that von Braun was indeed one of the scientists Truman brought in on the Roswell UFO crash.
• In the book, Trundle cites an account given by Clark McClelland, astronaut and former science officer with the Kennedy Space Center, who describes a memorable exchange he once had with von Braun. During one of many meetings of Cape Canaveral launch crews, McClelland and von Braun stepped outside onto a patio for a chat. The conversation drifted to the 1947 Roswell incident. Von Braun and his colleagues were working at the White Sands Testing Range near Roswell, testing captured V-2 rockets. McClelland asked von Braun whether the rumored Roswell UFO crash really happened.
• On condition that McClelland wouldn’t repeat any of it while von Braun was still alive — a pledge which McClelland kept — von Braun told McClelland that in fact he had been asked to help inspect the crashed UFO. Von Braun described the craft’s material as being a thin, unfamiliar substance more resembling some sort of skin than metal. Some pieces were like silvery chewing gum wrappers, von Braun said.
• [Editor’s Note] Wernher von Braun died in 1977. In 1978, investigative reporter Stanton Friedman interviewed former Air Force intelligence officer Major Jesse Marcel, a Roswell eye witness who said that it was no weather balloon that crashed in the desert, but a UFO. Thus, the legend of the Roswell UFO crash entered the public zeitgeist. And the silvery ‘chewing gum wrapper’ like material that von Braun mentioned? Jesse Marcel hid several sheets of it in his hot water heater at his home in Houma, Louisiana. It may still be there today. (see ExoArticle here)

• A 2019 Gallup poll revealed that 68 percent of Americans believe that the government is hiding information about aliens and UFOs from the public. Thirty-three percent of respondents said that they believe UFOs are alien spacecraft from other worlds. So why then would the government lie about aliens? Sarah Scoles, the author of the book: They Are Already Here: UFO Culture and Why We See Saucers,offers perspective and possible answers.
• The government alone has the means, motive and opportunity to maintain a cover-up of aliens and UFOs. Even US presidents’ security clearances are need-to-know. On Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2014, Bill Clinton revealed that during his time in office, he’d asked his people to look into both Area 51 and the Roswell files. He was denied access to those secrets. When Kimmel asked whether Clinton would tell the public if he discovered that extraterrestrials, or ‘ET’, were here, Clinton replied, “yeah.” Is this simply part of the cover-up?
• The government’s primary means of cover-up is its authority to classify information, making it a crime to disclose to the public. Such secrets can be sequestered to massive military bases. The notoriously secretive Area 51 Air Force installation in Nevada spans 2.9 million acres – twice the size of Delaware. Military guards at Area 51 are authorized to use “deadly force” against civilians who try to storm the base. This is a lot of security for a base whose existence the Air Force denied until 2013. There must be something truly incredible going on inside there.
• The government has proven that it is adept at cover-ups. When the public rumor-mill heard about a “UFO” crash near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, the Air Force used this as a cover-up for what the crash “debris” really was – a spy balloon under the ‘top secret’ Project Mogul. The point is that the US government is not above resorting to decades-long cover-ups.
• Is the government’s motive to cover-up the ET presence due to a fear of hostile ETs, or the fear of benevolent ETs ushering in an era of peace? The existence of any sort of extraterrestrials would unite us Earthlings. It would transcend national borders as we contemplated our place in a galaxy possibly teeming with life. What if benevolent ETs brought us technologies like free energy devices, warp drive propulsion, self-contained life support systems and the blueprints for spaceships? Such a technological renaissance would be a high-tech respite from international conflict.
• But under such a benevolent scenario, those currently benefiting and making a fortune off of the fossil fuel energy status quo would oppose it. A truly global society could topple national-level leadership. While ET technology would be good for the little guy, it would negatively affect the ‘powers that be’. Or perhaps the ‘powers that be’ already have such alien technology and want to keep these only to themselves. Perhaps the government wants to hide free “zero-point energy” from the public to keep big companies in business, and therefore keep the people poor and dependent on them. Or maybe the US military wants to keep this advanced technology hidden from foreign nations, giving the US an unbeatable advantage.
• No one really knows how the public would actually react to the sudden existence of extraterrestrials. In 1953, the CIA sponsored a small group of scientists and military personnel to evaluate the national security risks UFOs. Known as the Robertson Panel report, these experts warned that the public’s revelation of the existence of extraterrestrials among us would give the Soviets an opening to sow mass hysteria and panic in the United States. This sort of reasoning concludes that such hysteria could result in ‘more spying, more assassinations, the dissolution of religion’ and an increase in radicalism. This gave the government a legitimate national interest to protect.
• Alternatively, these extraterrestrials could represent an apocalyptic threat as in the movies War of the Worlds, Independence Day, and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Or maybe these aliens are benign or anti-social, and the government has determined that we are simply better off without them without making a big deal about it. The possible answers to why the government would choose to cover up the extraterrestrial presence spans a whole spectrum: They’d cause too much peace, make too much chaos, give too many people too much technology, or they’d just be a real disappointment. Believers can choose the one that makes most sense to them or tick off “all of the above.” But all of this has one certain result – there is enough of a narrative here to give ET/UFO conspiracists solid ground to support their conspiracy theories.

The Venn diagram center of those two groups clings to one of the most enduring conspiracy theories: The Government (it’s always with a capital G for believers) is squirreling away information about alien spacecraft. This idea appears, and has for years, on internet forums, social media, TV shows, memes, movies, and, of course, fiction, like Max Barry’s “It Came From Cruden Farm.”
Almost as interesting as any government secret is why it’s kept secret. And for alien UFOs, the conspiratorial answers span a whole spectrum: They’d cause too much peace, make too much chaos, give too many people too much technology, or, maybe—as is the case in Barry’s story—just be a real disappointment. Because the why here has so many potential answers, believers can choose the one that makes most sense to them or tick off “all of the above.”
Even powerful politicians, it turns out, think there may be more to the saucer story than meets the public eye. That’s why, when presidents become presidents, sometimes they, too, take an interest in the extraterrestrial. On Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2014, for instance, Bill Clinton revealed that during his time in office, he’d asked his people to look into both the Area 51 and Roswell files. “If you saw that there were aliens there, would you tell us?” Kimmel asked.
“Yeah,” said Clinton. (But if you’re inclined to believe in a cover-up, isn’t this affirmative just further evidence of disinformation?)
The president in Max Barry’s story similarly uses his power to seek out ufological secrets—immediately after his inauguration. The Air Force chief of staff, to the president’s surprise but perhaps not the reader’s, confesses that, yes, there is a specimen from space. It is, just as last year’s would-be raiders suspected, tucked away inside Area 51, a notoriously secretive Air Force installation in Nevada, whose existence wasn’t officially acknowledged till 2013 (although, you know, we knew).
It makes a certain sense that in this story, and in popular consciousness, the government holds these celestial secrets. After all, it alone meets the classic criteria of guilt: Means. Motive. Opportunity. Those elements make the conspiratorial conviction feel juuuust plausible enough. And if a hypothetical narrative is juuuust plausible enough, adherents have juuuust enough ground to remain standing on it—which is part of why this conspiracy theory has long, sturdy legs.

• Diane Tessman, the author of Future Humans and the UFOs, thinks that the USS Nimitz “Tic Tac” UFO displayed human characteristics. But at the same time, the UFO displayed an advanced technology in its propulsion and maneuverability that we have not yet achieved here on Earth at this time. Tessman’s conclusion? “My answer to the entire UFO puzzle is that it is us from the future rather than ETs, and as far as the Tic-Tac [crafts] go I don’t think [they] can be anything of this Earth or of this time period. That’s kind of the conclusion reached by experts.”
• The US Navy has officially classified the ‘Tic Tac UFO’ as an “unidentified aerial phenomena”, or ‘UAP’. Tessman points out that “The Navy did maneuvers in Southern California between San Diego and Tijuana every year there, and these Tic Tacs had been spotted by our regular operators on previous days and they had seen squadrons of them, many of them together.” So, did these UFOs anticipate the Navy’s scheduled maneuvers and intentionally show up there for the Nimitz’ Navy personnel to see them? “They would have known the Navy was doing maneuvers there and they didn’t seem to care that they were seen,” says Tessman.
• “And not only that, but the Tic Tacs engaged in a cat-and-mouse kind of game,” Tessman continues. “Commander Fravor said that he was chasing one of them and it ended up behind him. All of a sudden it flew back over him. [T]hese seem like hotshot military pilots on both sides.” Because of this, Tessman “psychologically profiled” the behavior of this chase and said she saw it as a “cat-and-mouse game” between two competitors which she says is “so human”. This indicates to Tessman that the intelligence piloting the mysterious craft is not only humanlike but actually human – our own species time travelling from the future to observe its history. Or they may be human-like Artificial Intelligence, or ‘AI’ doing this.
• “[The Tic Tac UFO pilots] show pride and arrogance like the fighter jet pilots do…” On the other hand, if aliens had been piloting the UAPs, Tessman thinks things would have gone differently. “[W]e don’t know how [the aliens] would act. They might fire on the jet pilots or they might be so peaceful that they’d be totally upset at the maneuvers the jet pilots were doing, chasing them and all, and they might just leave. …But these Tic Tacs didn’t leave. They seemed to expect it. I wonder if possibly they want disclosure now, if the time has come …that the Tic Tacs are saying ‘here we are.’”
The USS Nimitz “Tic Tac” UFO could actually be piloted by humanlike AI or living humans “not from this Earth”, according to a UFO researcher.
Diane Tessman, the author of Future Humans and the UFOs , explained that the USS Nimitz returned to same 
space year after year and entire “squadrons” had been seen on radar shortly before the encounter.

• U.S. Social Research for Gallup, commonly known as the “Gallup poll”, is an organization that has been conducting public opinion survey polls on various topics since it was created in 1935. Ever since then, Gallup has asked the public about their beliefs in fringe topics including the paranormal, aliens and UFOs. Just three years after its creation, Gallup found that 70% of the public were aware that Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast was a radio play, while 30% thought that they were listening to a real alien invasion.
• In 1965, Gallup polled Americans about “flying saucers”. 91% of the people they polled said they’d never seen one. 5% said that they had seen one. And 4% didn’t know what a flying saucer was. In 1996, Gallup asked the American public the same thing. This time, 87% said they had never seen a UFO, 12% said they had seen one, and 1% were oblivious.
• In 2019, Gallup once again asked Americans about UFOs, seeing that so much UFO news had hit the mainstream press with the ‘Tic Tac UFO’ in 2017/18 and ‘Storm Area 51’ in the summer of 2019. 60% of the public believe that these so-called ‘UFO’ sightings can be explained by human activity or natural phenomena. But 33% attribute UFO sightings to alien visitation. “This group is potentially sympathetic to those who want to uncover what the government knows about alien landings, once and for all,” wrote Gallup director Lydia Saad, though she is not a believer herself.
• In a geographic breakdown, the Gallup poll revealed that the percentage of people who believed in alien UFOs was 40% on the West Coast of the US, while 32% of Americans in the East and South believe, and 27% of people in the Midwest thought that aliens were buzzing us. People in the West were also more likely to say they’ve seen a UFO themselves. Saad suggests that, since the West is home for ‘Area 51’, “perhaps there’s more talk and awareness.” Saad also notes that “They have better visibility in some of those Western states than we have out East. It’s hard to see the stars out here in Connecticut.”
• Gallup also surveys Americans’ paranormal beliefs. In 2005, Gallup asked people about ghosts and ESP. Their responses have shown that the American public is receptive to the unknown. “A certain percent of people believe in a lot of things,” says Saad. “People aren’t straitlaced or very literal. There’s quite a lot of openness out there to things that we cannot see.” Over the past thirty years, Gallup has periodically surveyed Americans on the JFK assassination. A majority believe there was more than one shooter. As Saad put it, “the fact [is] that people don’t trust the government to tell the truth. That’s been an ongoing dimension of public opinion.”
In 2019, the public opinion polling company Gallup decided to directly ask the American public about their experiences with UFOs again, for one simple reason: semi-credible evidence of their existence was back in the news.
“Between the ‘Storm Area 51’ phenomenon and the New York Times articles about the Navy changing its protocols for pilots reporting unidentified things in the air—there was news of pilots seeing bizarre planes traveling at hyperspeed—maybe we’re at the point where some of this is getting more credence,” Lydia Saad told VICE, recalling what she was thinking at the time.
Saad is the director of U.S. Social Research for Gallup, and she oversees polls about a lot of things that don’t involve aliens. But in 2019, she advocated for asking about them again, reasoning that the amount of UFO news flooding the atmosphere might have changed people’s opinions. (She’s not a believer herself, she said: “I’m boring.”) The company conducted two surveys, in June and August of that year. They found that a majority of Americans—60 percent—think UFO sightings can be explained by human activity or natural phenomena. But a full 33 percent think otherwise, saying they believe some UFO sightings can be attributed to alien visitation.
“This group is potentially sympathetic to those who want to uncover what the government knows about alien landings, once and for all,” Saad wrote at the time.
Those numbers were particularly high in the West, where 40 percent of residents believed some UFOs can be attributed to aliens, compared to 32 percent of residents in the East and South, and 27 percent in the Midwest. People in the West were also slightly more likely—20 percent—to say they’d seen UFO themselves, versus 12 percent in the East and 15-16 percent elsewhere.
Saad hesitates to say precisely why that regional difference exists, but she does have some theories. “The home of Area 51 conspiracy is the West, so perhaps there’s more talk and awareness,” she said. She also proposed another theory, laughing: “They have better visibility in some of those Western states than we have out East. It’s hard to see the stars out here in Connecticut.”
“I wouldn’t want to say conclusively,” she added.
