One example is building a city on the Moon, which seems quite challenging considering the failures of the past. But what if the entire Apollo program and info which comes from a single source, NASA, a branch of the US military, was all a smoke screen? What if SpaceX had this information, that there are existing structures on the Moon, and that they were actively used by the US Military? It would certainly make their claims less fantastic. There is a long history of the US Military working with big business in a ‘dual use’ capacity, after World War 2 this was setup under the Marshall plan, whereby US companies like Bell Labs, Lockheed, and later Apple Computer, and others – would get access to post-classified technology. Lincoln Labs @ MIT, SPARC Labs in Palo Alto, Stanford Research Institute and many others would receive technology and rubber stamp it as usable for commercialization. Kevlar, fiber optics, and even semiconductors all originated from these labs who received it from the Military. We all know that Darpa, the Military’s own R&D lab created the internet, but what else were they up to?
The solid fact is that in the 1950s the army did build a solid plan to build a base on the Moon, it was called Project Horizon. Then it was ‘cancelled’ – yet the Army, NASA, and other organizations continued their interest in the Moon. They photographed it, continued research and studies – why? The 1950s was the beginning of tensions that led to the Cold War, and there was a Space Race which JFK knew all too well, that was actually kickstarted by the Pre-Peace Germans (The Nazis. No resemblance to NASA that is just a weird coincidence). Wouldn’t both the Russians and the Americans have an interest to build a Moon Base, get their first, and dominate the Earth from Space? That was the thinking in the published documents we can read (see more below in the references) regarding Project Horizon. This went to the Joint Chiefs, the President, the CIA – everyone was for it. Then boom – it vanished. But did it?
In recent years, specifically since 2023 or so, new information has surfaced making these old claims more credible. Some active military have publicly described missions to the moon:

Being a proven member of the US Military this is not channeling or some crackpot with hallucinations. This testimony is solid, and his story is worth having a deep dive into. Of course you will ask, if this is true, why isn’t it on Fox News? Well, since Trump has produced an EO that protects whistleblowers from NDAs that actually have ‘death’ as a penalty, many of them have come forward to corroborate JPs claims.
There is also a slew of documents from document leaks such as Wikileaks, indicating a Moon space war between rivals USA and USSR, from ExoPolitics.org:
A Wikileaks document that referred to the destruction of a US moon base sometime in the 1970s has recently gained renewed attention. The document is dated January 24, 1979, and is titled “Report that UR Destroyed Secret US Base on Moon.” It was correspondence involving one or more officials from the U.S. State Department to Samuel L. Devine, a Republican member of the US Congress. The document has tags “Operations–General | UR – Soviet Union (USSR)” which reveals that “UR” stands for the USSR. The document was marked unclassified, which suggests that the content of the correspondence did not contain classified information, and involved open source material widely available at the time. The fact that officials were discussing such a topic raises the question, did the USSR destroy a secret US moon base sometime before January 1979?
Wikileaks included the document in its dump of State Department diplomatic cables that it began releasing online in November 2010 and ended on September 1, 2011. Julian Assange’s arrest on April 11, 2018, sparked renewed interest in him and Wikileaks document dumps over the years.
Looking at this Forensically – these cannot all be ‘hoax’ documents. The hardcore disbelievers will say these documents are all ‘faked’ but there are thousands of them found over a period of 50 years, so that would be impossible. In any event, the elephant in the room is why is this not on TV. The answer is money and incentives, and power. The Deep State has access to technology that is beyond science fiction, and they are profiting from it. Not only that, they are doing bad things – experiments on humans, human trafficking, etc. They have no incentive to disclose – it means their cash stream dries up and they face potential lawsuits, sanctions, perhaps criminal probes? But they do have an incentive to hide this information, by force, threat, and with money. In fact, starting in the 1990s, whistleblowers who came forward with this information have all been murdered shortly after releasing info. Just as the US Government has been releasing information and documents, key scientists and other personnel have gone missing or have died in strange ways (David Wilcock), and this IS being reported publicly, on Fox News and CNN:

This Pentagon official turned whistleblower went on the mainstream news claiming photos do in fact exist of structures on the moon:
Former Pentagon official Luis Elizondo has claimed that the US government possesses unreleased photographs showing what appear to be giant monolith-like structures on the Moon, adding that the images could be made public in the near future. Speaking on the Disclosure Tonight podcast with Thomas Fessler, Elizondo said the photographs appear to show large structures on the lunar surface featuring distinct right-angle cuts. He described the images as “intriguing” and suggested they have yet to be released publicly.
The alleged structures have drawn comparisons to the mysterious monoliths featured in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 science fiction film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, which depicts towering rectangular objects on the Moon. Elizondo previously headed the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), a now-defunct initiative that investigated reports of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), commonly referred to as UFOs. Over the years, he has made several high-profile claims about alleged government knowledge of unexplained aerial objects and possible extraterrestrial technology.
In fact, there are hundreds of such reports. There are also hundreds of individuals who claim they have been on the Moon in Military operations (physically). There are witnesses such as William Tompkins who even laid out the engineering path of the companies that built the shuttles that took people there in the 1960s. There are thousands of witnesses who have experienced bits and pieces of the story. Some of that research is included here, but by all means do your own homework. If we included all the intel here we’d have to post an encyclopedia of data.
Sure, you are asking why isn’t this over the news? Well there’s a clear answer to that – this is Top Secret. There’s a reason the CIA headquarters is 15 minutes away from Tegna, the company that owns 90% of news channels. This secrecy was setup ostensibly to hide it from the Russians, from the Chinese, etc. not from the people – but that’s another kind of debate. Let’s just look at the firehose of evidence here.
You can read through all the research, but here’s the point. What if it’s all true? What if there is a Moon Base and Secret Space Program, started by the US Navy after World War 2 in Los Angeles and other places, and followed by the Army, Air Force, and CIA? If that were the case, it sure would explain where we spent a few Trillion dollars in the 1980s, and it would explain Ronald Reagan’s “Star Wars” and it would explain a lot of things like a hat on a bald head, it just fits.
Then you start to think, is Elon really so crazy, or is this a methodical white worlding plan to bring the Secret Space Programs public? These same secret witnesses describe tunnel networks zipping around Earth quickly in vacuum maglev tubes in shuttles for 2 like roller coasters (Boring Company). Project Horizon and the Question of a Post-Apollo Lunar Presence
Preliminary Research Base and Evidentiary Survey
Abstract
In 1959, the United States Army conducted Project Horizon, a detailed feasibility study for establishing a permanent scientific and military installation on the Moon. Project Horizon was neither folklore nor a retrospective allegation: the original study survives, the U.S. Army acknowledges the program, and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum maintains an archival Project Horizon collection. Army planners considered transportation, construction, communications, nuclear power, logistics, military applications, and the permanent occupation of the lunar surface. The proposed installation was intended to become operational during the 1960s. [1–3]
Project Horizon was also not an isolated episode. Declassified records show that the U.S. Air Force separately studied permanent lunar facilities, intelligence installations, military applications, and the LUNEX lunar expedition architecture. The documented historical record therefore establishes that multiple elements of the U.S. national-security establishment seriously investigated sustained military operations on the Moon before and during the formative years of NASA. What remains unestablished is whether any such program survived beyond the known studies or was transferred into classified channels after the civilian Apollo program assumed the public American lunar mission.
A second body of evidence consists of retrospective testimony from military personnel, NASA contractors, engineers, and researchers who alleged that photographs or other information indicated artificial structures or undisclosed activity on the Moon. These accounts include those of Karl Wolfe, Donna Hare, Ken Johnston, Vito Saccheri, and others. Their testimony varies substantially in evidentiary quality and should not be conflated with the documentary certainty surrounding Project Horizon itself.
This survey establishes a research framework in which documented military planning, witness testimony, photographic claims, and subsequent interpretation are treated as distinct evidentiary categories.
I. Project Horizon: The Documentary Foundation
The existence of Project Horizon is established beyond reasonable historical dispute.
In March 1959, Lieutenant General Arthur G. Trudeau, the Army’s Chief of Research and Development, directed the Army Ordnance Corps to examine what would be required to establish a manned lunar station by 1966. The resulting study was conducted primarily by the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA), with participation from technical services across the Army. Wernher von Braun appointed Heinz-Hermann Koelle to lead the project. [2]
The resulting report, Project Horizon: A U.S. Army Study for the Establishment of a Lunar Military Outpost, was completed in June 1959. The Army’s historical account describes a proposed station accommodating approximately 10–20 personnel and serving several functions: protection of American interests on the Moon, reconnaissance, communications, scientific research, deeper-space exploration, and potentially military operations. [2]
This was an engineering and logistical study rather than a speculative policy paper. The proposed installation included living quarters, laboratories, communications facilities, storage areas, medical facilities, surface transportation, and nuclear electrical generation. The structures were to be covered with lunar material to provide insulation and radiation protection. Four nuclear reactors were contemplated for power generation. [2]
Army planners estimated that approximately 245 tons of construction material and equipment would have to be transported to the lunar surface. The Army’s historical reconstruction states that planners envisioned approximately 75 Saturn II launches during construction and another 64 Saturn launches annually to sustain the outpost once operational. [2]
The Army’s own institutional history summarizes the objective even more starkly: Project Horizon contemplated landing personnel on the Moon in 1965 and establishing a 12-man lunar outpost in 1966. The projected cost exceeded $6 billion in contemporary dollars. [3]
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum independently maintains the Project Horizon reports as archival collection NASM.2020.0031, describing Horizon as an Army Ballistic Missile Agency study intended to determine the feasibility of establishing a “scientific and military base on the Moon.” [5]
Thus, any investigation of alleged subsequent American lunar programs should begin with an important historical fact:
The proposition that the U.S. military wanted a permanent lunar base is not speculative. The U.S. military documented such a requirement and developed detailed plans for fulfilling it.
II. Project Horizon Was Not the Only Military Lunar Program
Project Horizon becomes more historically significant when placed within the larger military-space planning environment of 1958–1961.
Declassified records collected by the National Security Archive at George Washington University demonstrate that both the Army and Air Force investigated military operations on or involving the Moon. These records include Project Horizon, an Air Force Military Lunar Base Program, the Air Force LUNEX plan, studies of lunar reconnaissance and communications, and even consideration of a Lunar Based Earth Bombardment System. [4]
The Air Force Military Lunar Base Program
An April 1960 Air Force Ballistic Missile Division study carried the classified title Military Lunar Base Program and the unclassified title S.R. 183 Lunar Observatory Study.
Its stated objective was to determine an economical and technically sound means of establishing a manned intelligence observatory on the Moon. The proposed development proceeded through six phases, beginning with lunar probes and culminating in an operational lunar base in June 1969. The study also contemplated later decisions concerning strategic systems based on the Moon, including a possible lunar-based Earth bombardment capability. [4]
This is important because it demonstrates independent institutional interest beyond the Army’s Project Horizon.
LUNEX
In May 1961, Air Force Systems Command produced the classified Lunar Expedition Plan—LUNEX.
LUNEX contemplated a crewed lunar landing and return by late 1967. Its strategic rationale explicitly included demonstrating American technological superiority over the Soviet Union. The document addressed development, production, schedules, budgets, management, logistics, engineering, personnel, training, and intelligence requirements. [4]
The National Security Archive consequently concludes that, before the lunar mission became firmly identified with civilian NASA, both the Army and Air Force advocated lunar outposts.
The significance is difficult to overstate.
Project Horizon was not simply an eccentric proposal generated by one ambitious group of Army engineers. It formed part of a broader period during which the American military establishment seriously considered the Moon a potential strategic domain.
III. What Officially Happened to Project Horizon?
The conventional historical record provides a coherent explanation for Horizon’s termination.
Responsibility for the American space program was increasingly consolidated within the newly created NASA. The Army transferred much of its space infrastructure, personnel, launch-vehicle development, and expertise to the civilian agency.
According to the Army, on March 25, 1960, General John B. Medaris was informed that Project Horizon had been forwarded through the Secretary of the Army and Secretary of Defense to NASA for whatever use NASA considered appropriate. The Army states that Horizon proceeded no further than the feasibility-study stage. [2]
The Army’s institutional history similarly records that approximately 6,500 personnel associated with the ABMA Development Operations Division were transferred to NASA, along with major rocket-development capabilities and responsibility for development of the Saturn launch vehicle. [3]
The Smithsonian describes Horizon as having been cancelled when responsibility for the American space program transferred to NASA. [5]
There is presently no comparable primary documentation demonstrating that Project Horizon itself continued secretly after this institutional transfer.
That distinction must remain central to the research.
The historical evidence establishes that Horizon existed and was terminated as an Army program. It does not establish that an operational successor was constructed covertly.
The appropriate historical question is therefore narrower:
Did termination of Project Horizon represent termination of the military lunar objective itself, or merely termination of this particular organizational approach to that objective?
At present, the documentary record establishes the former only insofar as Project Horizon itself is concerned.
IV. Karl Wolfe: Alleged Lunar Orbiter Images of a Far-Side Base
One of the most direct alleged eyewitness accounts comes from former U.S. Air Force Sergeant Karl Wolfe.
In testimony recorded for the Disclosure Project in September 2000, Wolfe stated that he entered the Air Force in January 1964, possessed a top-secret cryptographic clearance, and worked with Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base.
Wolfe alleged that while assisting at a facility processing lunar imagery, another serviceman showed him photographic mosaics originating from the Lunar Orbiter program.
According to Wolfe, the individual told him:
“We’ve discovered a base on the backside of the moon.”
Wolfe described the imagery as containing geometric structures, towers, spherical buildings and objects resembling large radar antennas. [6]
This is unusually specific testimony.
It is nevertheless testimony rather than independently authenticated photographic evidence.
There is also an important chronological issue requiring further investigation.
The Lunar and Planetary Institute records that Lunar Orbiter I launched on August 10, 1966, producing its photographs between August 18 and August 29. Lunar Orbiters II through V followed between late 1966 and 1967. [7]
Some secondary accounts place Wolfe’s experience in 1965. If that date originated with Wolfe rather than subsequent retellings, it would conflict with the established Lunar Orbiter chronology.
This does not automatically invalidate the entirety of Wolfe’s account. Memories of dates can deteriorate over several decades, and identifying precisely which imaging system Wolfe described is necessary before reaching a conclusion.
It does, however, constitute a genuine evidentiary problem.
Evidence classification: First-person retrospective testimony; specific allegation; chronology requiring resolution; no authenticated original image currently linked to the testimony.
V. Donna Hare: Allegations of Photographic Suppression
Former NASA contractor Donna Hare represents a different evidentiary category.
Hare stated publicly that she worked for Philco-Ford Aerospace from 1967 to 1981 as a design illustrator/draftsman supporting NASA. She described producing launch and landing graphics and lunar maps and working primarily around Building 8 at Johnson Space Center. [8]
Hare alleged that her clearance allowed her access to restricted areas and that she encountered personnel involved in photographic processing who told her anomalous objects were removed from photographs before public release.
Importantly, the photograph at the center of one of Hare’s best-known firsthand accounts was not a lunar photograph. Hare described what appeared to be an aerial photograph of Earth containing trees and an unidentified object. [8]
Other accounts attributed to Hare expanded the allegation into systematic photographic alteration during the Apollo period. [9]
The distinction matters.
Hare’s testimony potentially supports the proposition that she believed NASA photographic material was selectively altered. It does not by itself demonstrate the existence of a lunar base.
Her testimony should therefore be used in research concerning alleged information control rather than cited as direct evidence of lunar structures.
Evidence classification: First-person contractor testimony concerning alleged photographic suppression; potentially verifiable employment background; no Moon-base observation established by the testimony presently reviewed.
VI. Ken Johnston: Apollo Photographs and Alleged Lunar Structures
Former NASA contractor Ken Johnston later made a series of allegations concerning Apollo photographic material.
Johnston has described work associated with lunar-module testing and subsequently with the Lunar Receiving Laboratory. He has claimed that his responsibilities gave him access to Apollo photographic material and that he retained copies of images that otherwise might have been discarded.
Johnston subsequently argued that some lunar photographs contain evidence of artificial structures, including domes and geometric formations. He has additionally alleged that photographic material was altered or suppressed before public dissemination. [10]
These claims require two separate investigations.
The first concerns biography and access: precisely what positions Johnston held, when he held them, and what photographic materials those positions allowed him to access.
The second concerns interpretation: whether the features Johnston identifies in particular photographs are better explained by artificial construction, photographic processing, image artifacts, terrain, lighting, or other conventional mechanisms.
The two questions cannot legitimately be collapsed.
Even establishing that Johnston possessed authentic Apollo photographs would not establish that his interpretation of features within those photographs was correct.
Evidence classification: Retrospective contractor testimony plus photographic interpretation; employment/access potentially independently testable; claimed structures remain unverified.
VII. George H. Leonard and Somebody Else Is on the Moon
The hypothesis of artificial lunar structures predates Philip Corso’s The Day After Roswell by decades.
In 1976, George H. Leonard published Somebody Else Is on the Moon. Bibliographic records confirm that David McKay Company published the 232-page volume that year. [11]
Leonard argued that publicly available lunar photographs contained anomalous formations that he interpreted as evidence of artificial structures, machinery, or activity.
Leonard is important historically because his book demonstrates that the lunar-artifact hypothesis was already well developed by the mid-1970s.
However, claims repeated in later literature describing Leonard as a NASA scientist or NASA photographic-intelligence employee require independent verification. The bibliographic record establishes the book and its publication; it does not establish those biographical claims.
Accordingly, Leonard should presently be classified primarily as a researcher and photographic interpreter, not as a confirmed NASA insider.
That distinction substantially improves the reliability of the research record.
VIII. Vito Saccheri and Lester Howes: An Attempted Independent Examination
An intriguing secondary line of evidence appeared in a 1995 account written by engineer Vito Saccheri concerning events he said occurred in 1979.
Saccheri stated that he was then a project manager for an engineering company involved with the Venezuelan oil industry. According to his account, another American engineer, Lester Howes, introduced him to Leonard’s Somebody Else Is on the Moon and persuaded him to investigate the underlying NASA photographs. [12]
Saccheri described efforts to obtain access to higher-quality lunar photographic material and claimed that he and Howes eventually examined photographs at a NASA-associated facility.
His subsequent account maintained that the pair observed features they considered consistent with Leonard’s interpretations.
This testimony is potentially important because, if independently substantiated, it would represent an attempted replication of Leonard’s photographic observations rather than merely repetition of Leonard’s conclusions.
However, substantial verification remains necessary:
- Saccheri’s professional background should be independently established.
- Howes should be independently identified.
- The NASA facility and archive described in the account should be identified.
- The photographic frame numbers should be reconstructed.
- The exact images should be located in surviving NASA/Lunar Orbiter archives.
- Saccheri’s description of archive procedures and photographic numbering should be compared with contemporary NASA documentation.
Until those steps are completed, the Saccheri account remains retrospective testimony rather than independent confirmation of artificial lunar structures.
Evidence classification: Published first-person retrospective account describing attempted photographic verification; potentially testable through archival reconstruction.
IX. The Lunar Orbiter Archive Provides a Testable Dataset
One particularly valuable aspect of these claims is that at least some are potentially falsifiable.
The Lunar and Planetary Institute maintains an archive containing more than 2,600 high- and moderate-resolution photographs produced by the five Lunar Orbiter missions of 1966–1967. The archive includes image catalogs, mission documentation, photographic coverage maps, technical papers, and supporting information. [7]
This creates an opportunity considerably stronger than merely collecting testimony.
Where researchers such as Leonard, Saccheri, Wolfe, Johnston, or later authors identify specific frame numbers or lunar coordinates, those claims can potentially be reconstructed against archival imagery.
For each alleged anomaly, a rigorous procedure should include:
Original mission → frame number → lunar coordinates → generation of image → processing history → claimed anomaly → modern archival scan → geological interpretation → competing artificial interpretation.
This should become a major component of the larger investigation.
X. Project MOON DUST: Relevant, but Frequently Mischaracterized
Project MOON DUST should be treated cautiously.
Declassified documentation demonstrates that the U.S. military maintained intelligence requirements concerning the location, recovery, and technical exploitation of foreign space hardware.
This provides legitimate historical context for understanding how Cold War military intelligence treated recovered spacecraft and space-related technology.
It does not, however, establish that MOON DUST recovered extraterrestrial technology, nor does it establish the existence of a lunar installation.
Its relevance is institutional.
The documented military-intelligence infrastructure demonstrates that unusual or foreign space hardware could be treated as an intelligence target, recovered, transported, analyzed, and compartmentalized.
That becomes potentially relevant when comparing later testimony—including Corso’s—but the existence of such an infrastructure cannot be used as evidence that Corso’s extraterrestrial interpretation was correct.
Evidence classification: Documented military/intelligence activity; indirect contextual relevance; no direct Moon-base evidence presently established.
XI. An Evidence Hierarchy for the Investigation
The central methodological problem in Moon-base literature is the tendency to place fundamentally different forms of evidence on the same level.
They should instead be ranked.

This produces a very different picture from either the conventional dismissal of the subject or the uncritical acceptance found in some alternative literature.
What is established
The U.S. Army planned a permanent military lunar installation.
The Air Force separately studied permanent lunar facilities.
Military planners considered reconnaissance, communications, intelligence, strategic systems, nuclear power and sustained human occupation of the Moon.
These facts are supported by authenticated historical records. [1–5]
What is credibly alleged but not established
Identified military personnel and NASA-associated contractors subsequently alleged seeing anomalous lunar imagery or witnessing suppression of anomalous photographic material.
Those witnesses can be named and portions of their biographies can potentially be independently investigated.
Their testimony deserves examination, but testimony alone does not establish a lunar base.
What remains unproven
No primary documentation identified in this research pass establishes that the United States actually constructed a classified lunar base after Project Horizon.
No authenticated photograph examined thus far establishes an artificial lunar installation.
No evidence identified thus far establishes that Project Horizon itself continued under another name.
And no evidence reviewed thus far establishes that alleged lunar structures are American, Soviet/Russian, extraterrestrial, ancient, or otherwise artificial.
Those propositions remain hypotheses.
XII. The Research Question Going Forward
The historical question should therefore not initially be framed as:
Was there a secret Moon base?
That question prematurely assumes a conclusion.
A more rigorous formulation is:
What became of the U.S. military’s documented requirement and technical planning for sustained lunar operations after Project Horizon and related Air Force programs were formally displaced by the civilian Apollo program, and is there credible documentary, testimonial, photographic, or technical evidence that classified lunar objectives survived that transition?
That question is historically legitimate.
It allows evidence supporting either conclusion.
And importantly, it prevents Project Horizon itself from being used to prove something Project Horizon does not prove.
The government documents establish the intent.
The witnesses allege subsequent observations.

Photographic Provenance Audit of Claimed Lunar Anomalies
George H. Leonard, Vito Saccheri, Ken Johnston, and Karl Wolfe
Purpose and Scope
This appendix examines the specific lunar photographs and frame numbers cited by four frequently referenced figures in the literature on alleged lunar structures: George H. Leonard, Vito Saccheri, Ken Johnston, and Karl Wolfe. The purpose is not to determine in advance whether the claimed anomalies are artificial or natural. It is to reconstruct the photographic chain of custody as far as possible: identify the original NASA photograph or mission frame, locate surviving NASA/Lunar and Planetary Institute archival versions, determine what mission and camera produced the image, and separate the existence of the photograph from the interpretation of features within it.
A major methodological problem in lunar-anomaly literature is that NASA headquarters publicity numbers, Lunar Orbiter frame numbers, Apollo Hasselblad frame numbers, mapping-camera frame numbers, and later reproduction numbers are frequently treated as though they were interchangeable. They are not. Leonard’s book is particularly useful because it lists many NASA public-affairs identifiers alongside Lunar Orbiter and Apollo identifiers, allowing at least partial reconstruction of the original imagery.
The investigation produced three principal findings.
First, many of Leonard’s cited photographs are genuine NASA mission images that remain recoverable in official or institutional archives. Second, several of Leonard’s original NASA headquarters numbers cannot presently be mapped with confidence to surviving mission-frame identifiers. Third, later interpretations by Johnston and others often derive from copies, slides, enlargements, scans, or digital reproductions rather than camera-original negatives. That distinction is essential when evaluating small bright objects, linear marks, apparent towers, or geometric forms.
The results below should therefore be understood as a provenance audit, not as confirmation or rejection of artificiality.
A.1 George H. Leonard: Reconstruction of the Photographic Catalogue
Leonard’s Somebody Else Is on the Moon contains thirty-five photographic plates and an appendix listing additional NASA image numbers. A later reproduced edition cross-references many of Leonard’s headquarters publicity numbers with Lunar Orbiter and Apollo mission identifiers.
The following table reconstructs the identifiable sequence.

Several points deserve emphasis.
Plate 2 — 66-H-1612 / LO-II-042-H2
This is one of Leonard’s most frequently reproduced images. He described it as showing manufactured objects and a vehicle in Mare Tranquillitatis. The plate caption explicitly identifies the underlying Lunar Orbiter image as LO-II-042-H2.
The importance of this example is methodological: the alleged object is not known solely from a hand drawing or verbal description. It is tied to an identifiable Lunar Orbiter mission frame. That permits comparison of Leonard’s reproduction against later-generation scans of the same terrain.
This does not establish that Leonard’s interpretation is correct. It does establish that the image itself has a traceable mission origin.
Plate 4 — 66-H-1293 / LO-I-1136-H3
Leonard identifies this farside image as Lunar Orbiter I frame 1136-H3, claiming a large machine-like structure near the wall of an octagonal crater.
Because the Lunar Orbiter program used onboard film, automatic development, scanning, and analog radio transmission, every claimed fine-scale anomaly in these images must be evaluated with the imaging chain in mind. Film grain, processing streaks, scan lines, synchronization marks, contrast enhancement, and multiple generations of photographic reproduction can produce structure not present at the scale of the lunar terrain.
Plate 14 — 67-H-1135 / LO-V-168-H2
This case is particularly useful because the same frame has a conventional geological interpretation. Leonard regarded two bright objects and their tracks in Vitello Crater as evidence of moving objects. Lunar-science discussions identify the same scene as boulders and downslope tracks, a recognized form of mass wasting on the Moon. The frame is associated with Lunar Orbiter V, site Vitello, frame 168, and was acquired in August 1967.
This makes Plate 14 one of the strongest examples for an academic comparison because both interpretations refer to the same identifiable image:
Leonard interpretation: mobile engineered objects.
Conventional interpretation: boulders that rolled or slid downslope.
The frame itself is authentic. The dispute concerns interpretation.
Plates 8, 10, 11, and 12 — King Crater
Leonard repeatedly cited the King Crater region, particularly Apollo 16 photographs.
Official LPI indexing confirms that AS16-P-5000 is a panoramic-camera image centered near King Crater at approximately 7.3°N, 119.3°E.
Similarly, the LPI Apollo Image Atlas identifies:
- AS16-120-19226 — King Crater region;
- AS16-120-19228 — north rim of King Crater;
- AS16-120-19263 through 19267 — a sequence centered near 118–122°E longitude.
NASA archival metadata describes AS16-120-19228 as an Apollo 16 color Hasselblad image of the north rim of King Crater, acquired from approximately 118 km altitude.
These are therefore high-quality provenance cases. The photographs are unquestionably Apollo 16 imagery; Leonard’s claimed “X-drones,” spraying craters, and machinery are interpretive overlays placed on genuine lunar photographs.
Plate 23 — AS16-M-0758
Leonard associated 72-H-1113 with AS16-M-0758, describing an unexplained band of light near Lobachevskiy Crater.
The LPI Apollo Image Atlas independently lists AS16-M-0758 as a mapping-camera photograph centered at approximately 7°N, 114.6°E, and explicitly indexes the image under Lobachevskiy.
This is therefore another successfully reconstructed image chain.
Plate 29 — LO-IV-187-H2
Leonard interpreted features in the Mare Orientale region as a construction area. The same Lunar Orbiter IV frame is independently used in mainstream lunar geology to study volcanic morphology, mare fill, domes, vents, and rilles in the Orientale region.
That comparison is particularly instructive. Features Leonard classified as possible engineering occur within terrain that lunar geologists have interpreted in terms of volcanism, fissure vents, lava plains, and structural geology.
Again, the underlying photograph is real; the dispute is interpretive.
Plate 31 — AS10-32-4819
This photograph has exceptionally clear provenance. NASA/NARA describes AS10-32-4819 as an Apollo 10 oblique photograph of Triesnecker Crater and the central bay, acquired with a 70-mm black-and-white camera using an 80-mm lens.
LPI independently lists the frame at approximately 5.2°N, 4.3°E.
Leonard interpreted parallel features in the scene as “ribbing.” The archival record confirms the frame and terrain but does not attribute artificial significance to the features.

The book’s later cross-reference appendix links only part of this headquarters-number catalogue to modern mission-frame identifiers.
This matters because the inability to locate a modern digital record under an old H-number is not, by itself, evidence that an image disappeared or was suppressed. NASA public-affairs photo numbering and mission technical numbering were separate systems. Some historical publicity prints can survive without immediately searchable cross-indexes.
Accordingly, unresolved headquarters numbers should be classified as:
not yet cross-referenced, rather than missing.
A.3 Vito Saccheri: What Photographs Did He Actually Claim to Examine?
Vito Saccheri’s 1995 account is frequently cited as independent verification of Leonard’s observations.
His narrative states that he and engineer Lester Howes approached NASA seeking the photographs listed in Leonard’s book. Saccheri says they possessed Leonard’s photo-number list but were initially told that the numbering used in the book did not correspond to the numbering system in the Houston facility. He further claimed that NASA personnel eventually assembled thousands of lunar photographs for examination.
This is significant because Saccheri did not introduce a clearly separate catalogue of new frame numbers in the surviving published version of his account.
Rather, his investigation was explicitly derivative of Leonard’s list.
Therefore, the proper scholarly treatment is:
Saccheri’s claim constitutes alleged independent visual examination of images associated with Leonard’s catalogue, not an independent photographic catalogue of his own.
That distinction should prevent double-counting.
If Leonard cites LO-II-042-H2 and Saccheri claims that he later viewed the photograph Leonard referenced, this creates two witnesses discussing one image, not two independent images.
Saccheri’s most testable claim is not therefore “NASA photograph X proves machinery.” It is his procedural claim that:
- he presented Leonard’s photo numbers to NASA personnel;
- NASA cross-referenced them to another internal numbering system;
- he and Howes were given access to a large-format photographic archive;
- he believed the high-resolution photographs confirmed Leonard’s descriptions;
- later copies supplied to him were of markedly poorer quality.
The publication value of Saccheri’s account therefore lies primarily in archive provenance and alleged resolution differences, not in adding new photographic identifiers.
Evidentiary status
Photographs: substantially overlap Leonard catalogue.
Independent frame list: not located in the surviving account.
Claim of higher-quality NASA prints: testimonial.
Claim of anomalous structures: testimonial interpretation.
Potentially testable element: whether historical NASA facilities maintained larger-format or lower-generation reproductions superior to public 8×10 copies.
A.4 Ken Johnston: Identifiable Photographs in the Johnston Corpus
Ken Johnston’s photographic claims differ from Leonard’s because they derive largely from Apollo-era prints retained in his personal collection and later rescanned.
It is important to distinguish Johnston’s physical archive from later interpretations made by collaborators, publishers, or anomaly researchers using scans of that archive.
Several identifiable frames recur prominently.
AS15-88-11967 — Alleged “Dish Array” or Lunar Base
This is one of the most frequently cited Johnston images.
Later researchers working with the Johnston archive described a cluster of bright features in AS15-88-11967 as an apparent “parabolic dish array” or lunar installation. Critical analysis identifies the same feature as a group of small craters combined with possible scanning/reflection artifacts in the Johnston-derived reproduction.
The important provenance point is that the official frame AS15-88-11967 exists independently of Johnston’s copy.
Thus the appropriate comparison is not:
“NASA image versus nonexistent whistleblower image.”
It is:
NASA archival scan of AS15-88-11967
versus
scan of Johnston’s Apollo-era copy of AS15-88-11967.
If a feature appears only in the latter, the possibilities include:
- processing differences;
- print-generation artifacts;
- dust or debris on the print;
- scanner contamination;
- reflection;
- contrast differences;
- physical retouching;
- or deliberate alteration.
Only comparison with a lower-generation archival source can discriminate among those possibilities.
AS12-49-7224 — Alleged “Effigy” or Artificial Structure
Another Johnston-associated image is AS12-49-7224. Critics note that the purported artificial feature is also present in official versions and interpret it as a large rock formation; Johnston himself has expressed caution about reading artificial forms into ambiguous lunar terrain.
This is a useful example because it demonstrates that “anomaly” does not necessarily imply image suppression. The disputed feature exists in both the Johnston-derived and archival imagery.
AS14-66-9279 and AS14-66-9301
Later Johnston-associated presentations highlighted unusual sky features in Apollo 14 images AS14-66-9279 and AS14-66-9301, sometimes described as unusual luminous forms or “blue flames.” Public NASA versions of both photographs are available for comparison.
These claims require inspection of adjacent frames because a genuine distant object should often persist or move coherently across sequential photographs, whereas film defects or scanner contamination may appear in only one reproduction.
AS15-88-12013 and AS15-88-12014
These Apollo 15 frames have been used in Johnston/Hoagland-associated discussions of atmospheric color, “airglow,” and alleged image-processing differences. Different publicly available reproductions show significant changes in color balance and contrast.
This is not surprising in itself. Color film can produce substantially different digital outputs depending on scanning, exposure, color correction, internegative generation, and white-balance assumptions.
Accordingly, differences in appearance between web versions should not be treated as proof of suppression without establishing:
film original → internegative → print → scan → digital processing history.
AS16-120-19187
Johnston/Hoagland-related presentations have also used AS16-120-19187, an Apollo 16 Earthrise photograph. NASA describes the frame as an April 19, 1972 Hasselblad image acquired during revolution 2, using SO-368 color film and a 250-mm lens from approximately 244 km altitude.
The archival provenance of this image is therefore exceptionally strong.
Any claimed geometric or transparent structure associated with the frame must be evaluated against the high-resolution archival scan and neighboring frames from the same film magazine.
Apollo 10 Sequence — AS10-27-3855 through 3883
A detailed critical reconstruction of Johnston-associated imagery identifies a group of Apollo 10 frames from magazine N, including AS10-27-3870, as source material for alleged lunar-base imagery. The same source lists the broader series AS10-27-3855 through 3883.
Because this is an ordered Hasselblad sequence, it is especially valuable for testing anomalous features: terrain should recur in adjacent photographs according to spacecraft motion and camera geometry, whereas print/scanner defects generally will not.
AS17-147-22465
In Dark Mission-related research, Johnston is credited with identifying AS17-147-22465, an Apollo 17 photograph taken from the lunar module during descent toward Taurus-Littrow. The image was used to argue for unusual color effects in the lunar environment.
Again, the image itself is authentic; the interpretive claim concerns color and alleged optical structures.
A.5 Johnston Provenance Assessment
Johnston’s archive has one major strength and one major weakness.
The strength is historical: he apparently retained Apollo-era photographic prints rather than relying solely on modern web downloads. Even critical sources acknowledge that he possessed a substantial Apollo photo collection associated with his work at the Lunar Receiving Laboratory.
The weakness is generational.
The retained prints were not camera-original negatives. They were photographic reproductions produced as part of NASA’s Apollo documentation process. Every later scan of those prints adds another generation.
The relevant chain therefore resembles:
Hasselblad camera negative / color original
→ NASA duplicate/internegative
→ archival print
→ Johnston-held print or transparency
→ later digital scanner
→ image enhancement/cropping
→ online reproduction.
The more subtle the alleged feature, the more important this chain becomes.
A feature measuring only a few pixels in a modern scan cannot be attributed confidently to the original lunar scene until the same feature is demonstrated in a scan made directly from the best surviving mission-generation film.
A.6 Karl Wolfe: No Recoverable Frame Number
Karl Wolfe’s testimony presents a different problem.
Wolfe stated that another Air Force technician showed him high-resolution lunar imagery allegedly depicting structures or a base on the lunar far side. He described geometric buildings, towers, spheres, and antenna-like structures. However, in the publicly available testimony reviewed for this study, Wolfe did not provide a specific Lunar Orbiter frame number.
This creates a major evidentiary limitation.
Without a frame number, lunar coordinates, processing roll, photographic mosaic identifier, or mission date, it is impossible to perform the same direct archival reconstruction possible for Leonard’s material.
There is also a chronology problem. The Lunar and Planetary Institute records that Lunar Orbiter I did not begin acquiring lunar photographs until August 1966.
If Wolfe’s experience occurred earlier than this, one of several possibilities must be considered:
- the remembered year is incorrect;
- the imagery came from a different lunar-imaging program;
- later retellings introduced the date discrepancy;
- the testimony is inaccurate.
Until one of these possibilities can be resolved, Wolfe’s photographic claim should remain classified as:
identified witness / unidentified image.
It should not be assigned to a particular Lunar Orbiter photograph simply because later researchers find a visually interesting frame.
A.7 Provenance Classification
For purposes of publication, each image should be assigned one of four provenance grades.
Grade P1 — Direct archival identification
The exact Apollo or Lunar Orbiter mission frame is known and survives in a NASA, LPI, NARA, NSSDC/PDS, or similarly authoritative archive.
Examples:

These are the strongest cases for reproducible analysis.

A historical NASA public-affairs number has a published cross-reference to a mission frame, but the mapping has not yet been independently confirmed from the original catalog.
Examples include several of Leonard’s older H-number identifications.
Grade P3 — Historical photograph identified, mission frame unresolved
The image is clearly associated with NASA lunar photography and appears in a contemporary or near-contemporary source, but the precise camera frame cannot presently be established.

Grade P4 — Testimonial image only
A witness describes an image but provides no recoverable frame number or original photograph.
The primary example is Karl Wolfe.
A.8 What the Archival Comparison Shows
The most important conclusion of this audit is not that the anomaly claims are proven or disproven.
It is that a surprisingly large portion of the photographic literature is testable.
Leonard’s strongest photographic claims are tied to genuine mission frames. The same photographs can often be found today in NASA, LPI, NARA, or lunar-science archives. This permits comparison across generations.
In several cases, conventional explanations are already available.
Vitello / LO-V-168-H2: objects interpreted by Leonard as mobile artificial forms are conventionally identified as boulders with tracks.
Mare Orientale / LO-IV-187-H2: terrain interpreted by Leonard as construction is independently studied as volcanic and structural lunar geology.
AS15-88-11967: alleged Johnston “dish array” has been attributed by critics to small craters and reproduction/scanning artifacts.
AS12-49-7224: claimed artificial features are also present in ordinary archival imagery, weakening claims that the feature itself was removed from official versions.
Other images remain less easily explained and deserve frame-by-frame comparison rather than summary dismissal.
A.9 The Most Important Technical Issue: The Lunar Orbiter Imaging Chain
The Lunar Orbiter photographs require special caution.
Unlike modern digital spacecraft, Lunar Orbiter exposed photographic film aboard the spacecraft. The film was chemically processed onboard, scanned line-by-line, transmitted to Earth as an analog signal, reconstructed on the ground, and assembled into photographic products.
Consequently, apparent geometry in a later copy may arise at several stages:
- original lunar terrain;
- illumination and shadow geometry;
- film grain;
- development artifacts;
- scan-line artifacts;
- synchronization markings;
- radio-transmission noise;
- ground reconstruction;
- mosaic assembly;
- contrast enhancement;
- photographic duplication;
- later scanning.
This matters enormously for alleged “pipes,” “towers,” “crosses,” “domes,” or “machinery.”
An artificial-looking feature should ideally survive across:
- the original Lunar Orbiter frame;
- neighboring framelets;
- alternate scan products;
- later missions imaging the same coordinates;
- modern Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter imagery.
A feature appearing in only one historical reproduction should receive substantially lower evidentiary weight.
A.10 Proposed Reproducibility Standard
Every lunar-anomaly photograph used in the main paper should therefore be published with the following information:
Claimed source: author or witness who originally cited the image.
Original identifier: NASA/HQ publicity number if applicable.
Mission identifier: Apollo or Lunar Orbiter technical frame number.
Mission: spacecraft and date.
Camera: Hasselblad, mapping camera, panoramic camera, or Lunar Orbiter photographic system.
Coordinates: where available.
Archival source: NASA/LPI/NARA/PDS record.
Claimed anomaly: concise description without interpretation.
Competing interpretation: geological, photographic, optical, or processing explanation.
Adjacent-frame test: whether the feature appears elsewhere.
Modern-imagery test: whether the location is visible in LRO imagery.
Provenance grade: P1–P4.
Evidence conclusion: unresolved, conventional explanation favored, anomaly survives, or insufficient data.
This standard converts what has traditionally been a highly subjective literature into a potentially reproducible evidentiary exercise.

A.12 Preliminary Conclusion
This provenance study materially changes the nature of the lunar-base question.
The surviving literature does not consist solely of anonymous stories about photographs no one can locate. A substantial portion of George Leonard’s catalogue can be traced to identifiable Lunar Orbiter and Apollo frames, and several Johnston-associated claims can likewise be tied to specific Apollo photographs still preserved in public archives.
That is important.
But provenance is not proof of interpretation.
An authentic NASA photograph containing an ambiguous shape proves that NASA photographed the terrain. It does not by itself prove that the shape is a machine, base, tower, dome, vehicle, or artificial structure.
Conversely, the existence of plausible natural or photographic explanations should not substitute for examination of the actual frames.
The appropriate conclusion at this stage is therefore narrower:
The photographic claims associated with Leonard and Johnston are sufficiently well documented in a number of cases to permit reproducible archival investigation. Saccheri’s account largely refers back to Leonard’s catalogue and should be treated as alleged independent examination rather than an independent photo set. Wolfe’s testimony currently lacks the frame-level specificity required for direct archival testing.
The next phase should not consist of accumulating additional anecdotes.
It should consist of forensic image comparison.
For each P1 photograph, the original or highest-generation surviving NASA/LPI scan should be compared with the version used by the claimant, followed by examination of adjacent frames and modern LRO imagery of the same coordinates.
That process can potentially distinguish four very different outcomes:
natural lunar geology; photographic/processing artifact; genuine but unidentified physical feature; or an anomaly for which an artificial interpretation remains viable.
Only the final category would materially strengthen the hypothesis under investigation.

Frame-by-Frame Forensic Analysis of Selected Lunar Anomaly Photographs
Scope and Method
This appendix applies the provenance framework established in Appendix A to a smaller set of high-priority photographs. The purpose is not to decide whether any particular feature is artificial by inspection alone. The objective is to test each claim against the strongest surviving photographic record.
Each case is evaluated using five criteria:
- Archival identity — whether the exact Apollo or Lunar Orbiter frame can be independently verified.
- Mission context — camera, altitude, illumination, coordinates, and surrounding sequence.
- Claimed anomaly — what Leonard, Johnston, or a later interpreter alleged was visible.
- Competing interpretation — geological, photographic, or processing explanations.
- Persistence test — whether modern LRO imagery or adjacent historical frames support the existence of a corresponding physical feature.
The evidentiary distinction is fundamental: an authentic NASA photograph may contain a genuine visual feature without that feature being artificial. Conversely, a poor-quality historical reproduction can obscure a real feature or introduce artifacts. Therefore, the strongest conclusions arise when the same feature persists across independent image generations or later spacecraft observations.
B.1 LO-V-168-H2 — Vitello Crater and the “Moving Objects”
Archival Identification
George H. Leonard reproduced NASA photograph 67-H-1135 as Plate 14 in Somebody Else Is on the Moon and cross-referenced it to Lunar Orbiter V frame 168-H2. Leonard interpreted two bright objects and associated tracks in Vitello Crater as mobile objects. His later reproduced edition explicitly identifies the frame as LO-V-168-H2.
Independent mission information identifies Lunar Orbiter V frame 168 as an image of Vitello acquired on August 17, 1967, with a spacecraft range of approximately 172 km and central coordinates near 30.54°S, 322.40°E.
Claimed Anomaly
Leonard regarded the bright objects and tracks as evidence of movement and emphasized what he considered improbable paths. His interpretation was that these were not passive rocks but objects displaying purposeful locomotion.
Conventional Interpretation
The same photograph has long been identified as an example of downslope boulder movement. The brighter objects are interpreted as boulders that rolled or slid across regolith, leaving tracks behind them.
Modern LRO observations materially strengthen the conventional interpretation. NASA reports that LROC has documented numerous lunar boulder fields and boulder tracks, including examples in the broader Vitello region associated with slope failure and seismic activity.
Forensic Assessment
This is one of the clearest cases in the dataset where the claimed anomaly corresponds to a real physical feature, but the artificial interpretation is not required.
The tracks are not image defects. They represent genuine surface changes. The central issue is what made them.
The existence of comparable boulder tracks in modern LRO imagery demonstrates that the process visible in Lunar Orbiter V imagery is consistent with ordinary lunar mass wasting.
Assessment: Genuine physical feature; conventional geological explanation strongly favored.
Evidence status: Resolved toward natural origin.
B.2 LO-IV-187-H2 — Mare Orientale / Kopff and Alleged Construction Activity
Archival Identification
Leonard’s appendix associates NASA image 67-H-935 with LO-IV-187-H2, covering the Mare Orientale region.
The surviving Lunar Orbiter IV image is independently identifiable. A public NASA-derived copy identifies Kopff Crater near the center and the rilles known as Rimae Kopff.
Claimed Anomaly
Leonard interpreted parts of the region as evidence of construction, engineering activity, or machine-like formations.
Geological Context
The same frame is used in conventional lunar geological analysis. Research on the Kopff/Mare Orientale region discusses low domes, rilles, volcanic morphology, dark-halo craters, and possible endogenous volcanic processes visible in LO-IV-187-H2.
The International Astronomical Union’s planetary nomenclature database identifies Rimae Kopff as an extensive recognized lunar rille system centered near 14.68°S, 88.10°W.
Forensic Assessment
This case demonstrates the danger of interpreting unfamiliar geology in engineering terms.
Linear grooves, vents, ridges, domes, and geometric-looking boundaries can appear highly structured in low-resolution oblique imagery. Yet the same region contains recognized volcanic and tectonic landforms.
Nothing in the archival record presently requires an artificial explanation.
This does not mean every shape Leonard identified has been individually explained. It does mean the broader terrain possesses a strong geological context capable of producing the classes of structure he emphasized.
Assessment: Authentic frame; anomalous interpretation not supported independently; volcanic/structural geology provides a sufficient working explanation.
Evidence status: Conventional explanation favored.
B.3 AS16-120-19228 — North Rim of King Crater
Archival Identification
This is among the best-documented photographs in the entire anomaly literature.
NASA’s Apollo 16 photographic index identifies AS16-120-19228 as a Magazine V Hasselblad image acquired during Revolution 38. The principal point was approximately 7.6°N, 120.7°E, altitude approximately 118 km, using a 250-mm lens with a solar elevation of about 38°. The official description is simply “King, N Rim.”
NARA independently preserves the same frame and describes it as a view of the north rim of King Crater.
Leonard’s later plate catalogue associates the King Crater anomaly material with this Apollo 16 sequence.
Claimed Anomaly
Leonard interpreted several King Crater photographs as containing machinery, structures, excavation activity, or “X-drones.”
The claim is significant because this is not a vague recollection: the underlying Apollo frame is known exactly.
Adjacent-Frame Test
AS16-120-19228 belongs to an ordered orbital photographic sequence. NASA’s index lists neighboring frames:
- AS16-120-19226 — King north rim
- AS16-120-19227 — King northwest rim
- AS16-120-19228 — King north rim.
Thus, any proposed large physical structure should in principle be compared across the overlapping sequence.
Modern LRO Test
The King Crater region has since been imaged by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera at dramatically higher resolution.
LROC provides controlled Narrow Angle Camera mosaics of King Crater’s central peak at approximately 1.2 meters per pixel.
More importantly for the northern rim area, LROC has produced a controlled mosaic of the King Crater Natural Bridge region extending approximately from 5.61°N to 7.68°N and 119.11°E to 120.64°E—overlapping the coordinates of the Apollo 16 King rim photography. The mosaic is likewise approximately 1.2 m/pixel.
Forensic Assessment
This produces a powerful test.
Apollo 16 photographed the terrain at orbital scale. LRO later photographed the same region at meter-scale resolution. If Leonard’s alleged machinery represented large permanent structures, their geometry should either remain visible or leave discernible surface evidence.
The LROC data confirm that King Crater contains genuinely unusual topography, including large blocks, steep slopes, natural bridges, mass-wasting deposits, and highly angular geology. Such terrain could easily appear mechanical in lower-resolution, obliquely illuminated Apollo imagery.
No archival source examined in this pass identifies a verified constructed object corresponding to Leonard’s claim.
Assessment: Excellent archival provenance; modern high-resolution coverage exists; no independent evidence of artificial construction identified.
Evidence status: Unresolved at crop level, but artificial interpretation presently unsupported.
B.4 AS16-120-19263 through AS16-120-19267 — King Crater Sequence
Archival Identification
Leonard’s cross-reference catalogue associates the King Crater plate series with AS16-120-19263 through AS16-120-19267.
These frames are especially valuable because they form a sequence rather than a single isolated image.
Forensic Importance of a Sequence
A photographic sequence allows several tests that a single frame cannot.
A real structure should:
- occupy a consistent geographic position;
- change apparent orientation according to spacecraft motion;
- respond predictably to changing perspective;
- remain associated with the same terrain features.
An artifact on film, dust, emulsion damage, or scanner contamination may instead remain fixed relative to the frame or disappear altogether.
Preliminary Assessment
The Apollo 16 sequence is therefore a better test dataset than any cropped reproduction used in later books.
The present research pass has established the frame identities but has not yet reconstructed a pixel-level correspondence between every Leonard annotation and every adjacent frame. That should be done before drawing a final conclusion about individual marks.
Assessment: High-priority sequence suitable for rigorous parallax and persistence testing.
Evidence status: Open; requires crop-level co-registration.
B.5 AS16-M-0758 — Lobachevskiy and the “Band of Light”
Archival Identification
LPI’s Apollo Image Atlas independently identifies AS16-M-0758 at approximately 7.0°N, 114.6°E.
Leonard associated one of his anomalous photographs with the Lobachevskiy region and described a band or luminous feature.
Camera Context
Unlike ordinary Hasselblad photography, the Apollo mapping camera produced systematic orbital survey imagery. The sequence surrounding AS16-M-0758 includes adjacent mapping frames at progressively changing longitudes:
- 0757 — 116.2°E
- 0758 — 114.6°E
- 0760 — 112.0°E
- 0761 — 111.0°E.
This allows a geographic persistence test.
Forensic Assessment
A luminous line or band may arise from terrain, lighting geometry, emulsion or scanning effects, or a genuine transient phenomenon.
The fact that this is mapping-camera imagery is useful because the acquisition geometry is controlled and adjacent frames cover contiguous terrain.
At present, the research establishes the frame’s authenticity but not the artificiality of the band.
Assessment: Authentic mission image with strong sequence context; anomaly requires direct examination of neighboring mapping frames.
Evidence status: Unresolved.
B.6 AS10-32-4819 — Triesnecker Crater and “Ribbing”
Archival Identification
Apollo 10 frame AS10-32-4819 has exceptionally strong provenance.
NARA describes it as an oblique black-and-white image of Triesnecker Crater and the Central Bay, taken with an 80-mm lens on 70-mm film. Coordinates are approximately 5.2°N, 4.3°E.
NASA also reproduced the image in Apollo by the Numbers, identifying Triesnecker and its associated rille.
The original photographic sequence survives. NASA’s mission documentation shows neighboring frames AS10-32-4815 through AS10-32-4826 in the same magazine.
Claimed Anomaly
Leonard interpreted parallel or repetitive structures in this region as artificial “ribbing.”
Geological Context
Triesnecker is surrounded by an extensive recognized rille system extending across approximately 200 km. The crater itself has terraced walls, irregular morphology, and a central peak.
Forensic Assessment
The existence of a dense natural rille network makes linearity alone weak evidence of engineering.
Moreover, the low Sun angle used in the Apollo 10 image strongly emphasizes relief. Subtle ridges become high-contrast parallel patterns under grazing illumination.
Because adjacent frames survive, any specific alleged artificial line can be checked for geographic persistence.
At present, the identified morphology fits known lunar structural and volcanic terrain without requiring construction.
Assessment: Authentic image; linear morphology occurs in an established rille system; natural explanation favored.
Evidence status: Conventional explanation favored.
B.7 AS15-88-11967 — The Johnston “Dish Array”
Archival Identification
Apollo 15 frame AS15-88-11967 is independently documented in NASA’s official 70-mm photographic index.
The image was acquired during Revolution 49 using Magazine TT, 60-mm lens, at approximately 116 km altitude, centered near 3°N, 54.5°E, with high solar elevation. NASA describes it as a view of the Scientific Instrument Module bay from the Lunar Module with lunar terrain in the background.
NARA preserves the same frame and gives equivalent mission metadata.
Claimed Anomaly
Later presentations using copies associated with Ken Johnston’s Apollo archive identified bright features in the lunar background as a possible “dish array” or base.
Reproduction Problem
A detailed skeptical comparison argues that the dramatic version circulated in anomaly literature originated from a scan of a projector slide or reversal copy rather than the original mission film. Such copying is susceptible to reflections, dust, and high-contrast artifacts.
The same critic identifies the supposedly structured background area in the official version as a group of small craters and argues that the most striking bright points in the Johnston-derived scan are below the useful resolution of the reproduction.
Forensic Assessment
This is a strong example of why image generation matters.
The official frame exists independently. The alleged array becomes substantially more impressive in a later-generation copy than in the archival image.
That does not prove intentional alteration in either direction. It does show that the anomaly’s appearance is strongly dependent on reproduction history.
A claim that exists only after scanning a duplicate slide has significantly lower evidentiary weight than a feature visible in the mission-generation scan.
Assessment: Authentic photograph; strongest “dish” features appear dependent on later reproduction; crater field provides plausible underlying terrain explanation.
Evidence status: Likely reproduction artifact / over-interpretation.
B.8 AS12-49-7224 — The Johnston “Effigy” or Structure
Archival Identification
NARA identifies AS12-49-7224 as an Apollo 12 photograph of Bench Crater, acquired during EVA 2 on 70-mm black-and-white film using a 60-mm lens.
Claimed Anomaly
Later Johnston-associated presentations identified part of the terrain as an artificial figure, effigy, or engineered feature.
Comparison With Official Scan
The disputed feature also appears in the official NASA/NARA image. This is important because it rules out one common version of the suppression hypothesis: the feature was not simply removed from the public photograph.
Critics identify the form as a rock formation and note additional dust or fiber contamination in the later Johnston-derived scan.
Johnston himself was more cautious than some of his interpreters, acknowledging the tendency of observers to perceive meaningful shapes in ambiguous imagery.
Forensic Assessment
Because the feature persists in the archival photograph, it is a real visual component of the scene.
The question is whether it is an artificial object or natural rock.
No independent geometric, material, or contextual evidence has been located to support the artificial interpretation.
Assessment: Genuine terrain feature, not evidence of public-image deletion; natural rock interpretation favored.
Evidence status: Conventional explanation favored.
B.9 LO-II-042-H Series — Mare Tranquillitatis “Vehicle” Claim
Source Identification
Leonard’s appendix associates NASA publicity photograph 66-H-1612 with Lunar Orbiter II frame 42, apparently within the high-resolution subframes. Leonard interpreted the scene as showing a manufactured vehicle or machine.
The precise suffix is inconsistent across later reproductions. Leonard’s later appendix uses a notation resembling LO-II-42-H1-3, while subsequent secondary literature often gives LO-II-042-H2.
Forensic Problem
This inconsistency is important.
Before assessing the alleged vehicle, the exact original subframe must be fixed. Lunar Orbiter frames were divided into high- and medium-resolution components, and a mismatch among H1, H2, or H3 can shift the claimed crop substantially.
Assessment
This frame remains one of the most important candidates for further work because the claim is specific and tied to an identifiable mission family, but the exact technical identifier needs archival reconciliation before publication of a definitive image comparison.
Assessment: Potentially testable, but identifier normalization incomplete.
Evidence status: Open.
B.10 LO-I-1136-H3 — Far-Side “Super Rig”
Source Identification
Leonard cross-referenced NASA photograph 66-H-1293 to Lunar Orbiter I frame 1136-H3 and described a large machine-like structure associated with an unusual crater.
Forensic Limitation
This research pass did not locate a sufficiently authoritative modern indexed copy of the exact H3 subframe to perform a reliable visual comparison.
That absence should not be interpreted as suppression. Lunar Orbiter indexing conventions are complex, and older public-affairs numbers often require manual crosswalking to mission scan products.
Assessment
Because the claim is specific but the archival image chain is not yet fully reconstructed, the appropriate conclusion is simply that the case remains unresolved.
Assessment: High-interest historical claim; archival retrieval incomplete.
Evidence status: Open pending source reconstruction.
B.11 Cross-Case Findings
The frame-by-frame analysis produces a more nuanced result than either blanket acceptance or blanket dismissal.
1. Many “anomalies” are attached to genuine NASA photographs
Leonard and Johnston were not universally citing imaginary photograph numbers. A significant number of their references correspond to authentic Apollo and Lunar Orbiter frames still preserved in institutional archives.
That fact makes the claims scientifically testable.
2. Authenticity of the photograph does not authenticate the interpretation
Several strongest anomaly cases have credible natural explanations:
- Vitello: boulders and tracks.
- Triesnecker: rilles and relief under low-angle illumination.
- Mare Orientale/Kopff: volcanic and structural geology.
- AS12-49-7224: natural rock formation.
- AS15-88-11967: crater field plus probable later-generation scan artifacts.
3. Modern LRO imagery is decisive for persistent large structures
The King Crater case illustrates this especially well.
Apollo photographs with kilometer-scale or hundred-meter-scale alleged structures can now be compared with LROC images at roughly meter-scale resolution.
Any hypothesis involving permanent large-scale construction should confront this modern imagery directly.
4. Image-generation differences are a major source of false anomalies
The photographic chain matters:
camera original → duplicate film → photographic print → slide → scan → enhancement → web compression
A feature that appears only late in this chain carries much less evidentiary value than one present in early-generation mission imagery.
5. Some cases remain genuinely unresolved at the archival level
Not every Leonard reference has been fully reconstructed. Several older NASA H-numbers require deeper catalog work, and some Lunar Orbiter suffixes in secondary sources are inconsistent.
That unresolved state should be preserved rather than filled with speculation.

B.13 Conclusion
The photographic evidence reviewed here does not presently establish a lunar base or artificial installation.
That conclusion should not be confused with saying that the entire photographic record is fraudulent or fabricated.
On the contrary, the investigation shows that many of the historically cited photographs are genuine NASA images. Several contain genuinely unusual or visually striking features. Some features represent real physical processes that were poorly understood by non-specialists at the time. Others appear substantially more anomalous only after multiple generations of reproduction.
The strongest cases for future investigation are therefore not necessarily the most spectacular-looking photographs.
They are the ones that satisfy three conditions simultaneously:
precise original frame identification, unresolved morphology, and independent modern coverage of the same coordinates.
Under that standard, the most useful next targets are the King Crater Apollo sequence, AS16-M-0758, LO-II-42, and LO-I-1136-H3.
The significance of this result is methodological.
The question is no longer simply whether someone once claimed to see machines on NASA photographs. For a substantial portion of the material, the historical images still exist, the camera geometry is known, neighboring frames survive, and modern spacecraft have revisited the same terrain.
That means the claims can increasingly be judged not by reputation, belief, or institutional authority, but by repeatable comparison of the underlying evidence.

Here are two useful examples immediately:
1. King Crater — Apollo 16
This is an Apollo 16 metric-camera image of King Crater (AS16-M-1870). It is useful as a high-quality contextual image for the same King Crater region in which Leonard claimed to see artificial activity. The archival metadata places the image at roughly 113 km altitude during Apollo 16.
For the publication, however, we should show Leonard’s exact claimed frame/crop alongside the best surviving NASA version and then LRO imagery of the same coordinates.
2. Vitello Crater — Lunar Orbiter
Vitello is particularly valuable because we can go considerably deeper. Lunar Orbiter V photographed the famous tracks in Frame 168-H2, and the digitized high-resolution data have a ground resolution of approximately 1.9 meters per pixel. The published scientific description explicitly identifies rolling boulders in the frame.
At the same time, anomaly researchers argue that the paths are peculiar—curving, crossing irregular terrain and apparently changing direction. That gives us something substantive to put in the paper: same photograph, two interpretations, rather than simply repeating a claim.
What I think we should build
For the actual publication, I’d create an Illustrated Evidence Plates section after Appendix B. Each important case gets one full plate:

The Vitello case is especially promising because the original high-resolution H2 frame survives—the archive description specifically says Frame 168H2 shows the central peak and rolling boulders at 1.9 m/pixel.
And there’s an interesting provenance bonus: a vintage September 1967 silver-gelatin panorama of Lunar Orbiter V frame 168M survives, meaning we’re not dependent entirely on modern web scans for the historical appearance of this imagery.
